ESSAY:  Another Holmes?
Would it be possible to develop a modern - contemporary - Sherlock Holmes? If ACD were alive today… what sort of image would his main character portray?
We’ve seen many a recreation of Holmes and his cohorts (to say nothing of enemies like Moriarity) over the years. Even Data, (the role of Brent Spiner) managed a creditable Holmes… but then,  he was on the holo-deck of The Enterprise, and recreated a Holmesian London, circa nineteenth century. http://memorabiliacards.com/STQNGAUTOBSPINER.jpg More commonly, we see Holmes’ inspired pursuit of clues, or the clever noting of the lack of clues: “but sire, the dog did not bark…”
But, recreating Holmes?    Our closest Holmes to date, in, indeed, our 21st century? My vote would go to the television show ‘House’ and Hugh Laurie. Doctor Greg House’s name is only the first - and most superficial - connection to the famed investigator. Indeed; House follows a myriad of clues to ’solve’ patient illnesses, his taciturn nature, drug-dependence and boundless curiosity only allow the show one lack - a believable Watson. House has a flock of would-be Watsons; though none are so simple, or simply brave.
Gossip has it that New Line Cinema intends to create a modern Sherlock Holmes, (according to a report in The Hollywood Reporter.) and there is just the tiny whisper that Watson is to be female…
